NATURE & OUTDOORS
FOUNDATIONS (new)

The Nature & Outdoors Foundations (NOF) program is designed for individuals interested in nature and outdoor activities who wish to build confidence, awareness, and practical skills when spending time in natural environments, either individually or with groups. It does not require prior technical or guiding experience and is suitable for anyone seeking to enjoy the outdoors more safely and  responsibly. This 10-day training programme offers an immersive introduction to life in nature, blending personal development with essential outdoor skills. It invites participants to step out of their comfort zone while gaining practical experience in a supportive group setting. All learning takes place in the field, through shared experiences in accessible natural areas.

Upon completing the training, participants receive the Nature & Outdoors Foundations, issued by EWES. This certificate recognises the successful completion of the training and the fundamental skills acquired during the program

Over the course of 10 immersive days in the field—framed by simple online preparation—you’ll develop the essential skills to feel at home in nature. Step by step, you’ll learn how to live comfortably outdoors: setting up camp, caring for your equipment, and moving safely across natural terrain. With hands-on practice, you’ll explore the basics of navigation, route planning, and simple risk awareness, while also gaining confidence in applying first aid and foundational survival skills.

At the same time, this journey is about much more than techniques. You’ll discover the joy of being outdoors in community, learn to read the landscape with fresh eyes, and deepen your awareness of how to act with care and responsibility in natural spaces. Through shared experiences, reflection, and connection, the program invites you to build trust in yourself and others, opening the way toward a more meaningful and confident relationship with nature.

At its core, this training is a space to slow down, awaken your senses, and deepen your relationship with the land—so you can guide yourself and others with clarity, curiosity and care.

You’ll be part of a small, international group, mentored by experienced instructors from EWES. The learning is hands-on, practical, and rooted in real terrain—rain or shine. With expert mentorship and a rigorous, field-based approach, you’ll leave with the confidence and tools to navigate wild spaces, facilitate experiences, and move forward in your personal or professional journey.

Whether your path leads you toward guiding, ecological education, research, conservation, or nature-based facilitation, this training will help you find your footing—literally and metaphorically. It’s a meaningful first step into a more grounded, connected and empowered way of being outdoors.

Core Competencies for the Nature & Outdoors Foundations Program

Spending time in nature can be safe, enriching, and deeply rewarding when supported by a solid foundation of skills and awareness. The NOF program is designed to give participants the confidence and abilities to enjoy the outdoors responsibly, whether individually or in groups.

These core competencies form the backbone of the training:

Safety & Risk Management

Participants learn to keep themselves and others safe by preparing properly, recognizing risks in natural environments, and applying basic first aid and survival skills. Developing a calm and clear approach to challenges is central to building confidence outdoors.

Organization & Time Management

Planning and preparation are key to positive outdoor experiences. Through daily camp routines, route planning, and shared responsibilities, learners practice how to organize themselves and manage time effectively in nature.

Experience Design & Delivery

The program helps participants understand how to create simple yet meaningful outdoor activities. This includes balancing personal comfort with immersion in nature, and appreciating the value of group experiences.

Expectation & Communication

Clear communication within a group ensures safety, alignment, and enjoyment. Learners practice how to set expectations for activities, share responsibilities, and support one another in a positive way.

Leadership & Group Dynamics

Everyone has a role in creating a supportive and respectful environment. Participants gain hands-on experience in outdoor leadership, group decision-making, and learning to adapt to changing conditions.

Ethical Conduct & Environmental Responsibility

The NOF emphasizes respect for nature through low-impact practices. Learners apply principles such as Leave No Trace, ensuring their time outdoors supports both personal growth and environmental care.

By mastering these foundations, participants gain the confidence to enjoy the outdoors safely and responsibly, creating meaningful connections with nature and with others.

Who is this training for?

This program is designed for those who want to feel more confident, comfortable, and autonomous in nature. You will learn to take care of yourself, find your way, and manage your own outdoor experiences while connecting with both yourself and the environment.
